Retail Store Openings and Closings January 2019

January store opening and closing numbers from Chain Store Guide shows a slow but steady increase in store openings. In December we saw 512 new store openings while in January we saw this number edge up to 621. Store closures saw a jump from 122 in December to 722 in January. For January we saw a net loss of 101 stores, a drop from the net gain of 390 stores in December.

Viewing results from a geographic perspective, the regions that saw the most store openings were the Midwest with 220, South 177 and Atlantic 74. The regions that saw the most store closings were the Midwest with 182, Pacific 139 and South 134.
