Retail Store Openings and Closings September 2018

September store opening and closing numbers from Chain Store Guide saw another explosion of new store openings, driven by retail chains such as "category killer" retailers as well as "home and hardware" stores.  While August saw 1,425 new store openings, September was down just a bit with 1,023 new store openings. Store closures rose a bit, coming from 154 in August to 449 in September. This data shows a net gain of 574 new retail stores.

Viewing results from a geographic perspective, the states that saw the most store openings was Texas with 79, Florida with 65, and California with 58. The states that saw the most store closings were California with 36, Texas with 31, and Illinois with 27.

Openings - 1,023 Total

There were 584 new Home Center/Hardware stores, 237 Category Killer stores, and 115 new supermarkets::

Closings – 449 Total
