Retail Store Openings and Closings July 2018

July store opening and closing numbers from Chain Store Guide saw an explosion of new store openings, driven by companies getting into the business of renting tools and equipment.  While June only saw 92 new store openings, July was much more favarable with 2,804 new store openings. Store closures had remained virtually constant, rising slightly from 222 in June to 227 in July. This data shows a net gain of 2,577 new retail stores.

Viewing results from a geographic perspective, the states that saw the most store openings was California with 330, Texas with 238, and Florida with 193. The states that saw the most store closings wereTexas with 19, California with 16, and New York with 14..

Let's take a closer look.

Openings - 2,804 Total

There were 2,724 new equipment rental in the home improvement category, 24 new Consumer Electronics stores, and 32 new supermarkets::

  • Consumer Electronics = 24
  • Discount Department Stores = 12
  • Drug Store and HBC Chains = 4
  • General Merchandise Stores = 2
  • Home Centers & Hardware Chains = 2724
  • Office Products/Stationery = 3
  • Sporting Goods Retailers = 3
  • Supermarket Chains = 32

From a chain perspective, the breakdown was a follows:

  • BlueLine Rental = 109
  • DIY Home Center = 8
  • Food Lion = 2
  • Herc Rentals = 193
  • Home Depot Rentals = 2,147
  • Meeks Lumber & Hardware = 12
  • Meeks The Builders Choice = 36
  • Rural King Supply = 7
  • Sherwin-Williams = 8
  • ShopKo = 2
  • shoppers drug mart = 1
  • Smart & Final = 1
  • Smart & Final Extra! = 5
  • Sportsman's Warehouse = 3
  • Sprint = 24
  • Sprouts Farmers Market = 19
  • Sprouts Farmers Markets = 1
  • Staples Business Depot = 3
  • Sunbelt Rentals = 96
  • Target Pfresh = 1
  • Theisen's = 2
  • Theisen's Home Farm Auto = 2
  • Tigre Geant = 2
  • Tractor Supply = 8
  • Uniprix = 1
  • United Rentals = 96
  • Walgreens = 2
  • Walmart Canada Supercenter = 1

Closings – 227 Total

Supermarket stores one again saw the most closures at 66 stores:

  • Consumer Electronics = 14
  • Convenience Stores = 3
  • Discount Department Stores = 3
  • Drug Store and HBC Chains = 15
  • Food Service/Wholesale Grocers = 5
  • General Merchandise Stores = 30
  • Home Centers & Hardware Chains = 16
  • Home Furnishings Retail = 5
  • Houseware/Giftware = 14
  • Office Products/Stationery = 9
  • Pet Stores = 22
  • Sporting Goods Retailers = 12
  • Supermarket Chains = 66
  • Toy/Hobby/Craft/Fabric Retai =l 4
