Retail Store Openings and Closings August 2018

August store opening and closing numbers from Chain Store Guide saw an explosion of new store openings, driven by retail chains such as auto parts retailers as well as "dollar" stores.  While July saw 2,804 new store openings, August was down just a bit with 1,425 new store openings. Store closures had again remained constant, dropping slightly from 227 in July to 154 in August. This data shows a net gain of 1,271 new retail stores.

Viewing results from a geographic perspective, the states that saw the most store openings was Texas with 171, Florida with 94, and Georgia with 74. The states that saw the most store closings were New York with 10, California with 10, and Wisconsin with 9.

Openings - 1,425 Total

There were 697 new General Merchandise stores, 228 Auto Parts stores, and 124 new supermarkets::

Five Below = 26

Hibbett Sports = 14
Kirkland's = 10
Menards = 8

Office Depot = 4
O'Reilly Auto Parts = 12
Orscheln Farm & Home Supply = 5
Pet Supplies Plus = 13
Petco = 6
PetSmart = 14
REI = 7
Restoration Hardware = 4
Restoration Hardware Outlet = 9

Closings – 154 Total

Supermarket stores one again saw the most closures at 61 stores:
