April store openings and closings numbers from Chain Store Guide shows a significant drop in store closings. In March we saw 714 closures and in April we saw this number drop to 78. New store openings in March were 15 and stayed relatively unchanged with 25 in April. For April, we saw a 53 net loss of stores down from the 699 net loss we saw in March.
Viewing results from a geographic perspective, the Pacific region saw the most store openings and the Midwest saw the most store closings.
Looking at the results by category, Chain Supermarket stores had the most new store openings and closed the most number of stores.
Let's take a closer look.
Openings - 25 Total
Chain Supermarkets stores led at 18 new store openings including 12 Aldi’s. Category Specialists opened a total of four stores – three Cabela’s and one REI. The General Merchandise category opened two Family Dollar Stores while the Discount Store category opened one new Walmart.
Looking at openings geographically, the Pacific opened ten and the Atlantic region opened five. The Midwest opened four followed by the Rocky Mountain region opening three. The South saw two new store opening and Southwest saw one. The Northeast reported zero openings in April.
Closings – 78 Total
Chain Supermarkets saw the most closures at 33 with no one stand out chain. Category Specialists followed with 29 store shuttering and 26 of these were Toys “R” Us stores. The Chain Drug category saw 14 stores closed with 3 of these due to Walgreen store re-location. The Discount store category saw one Walmart close due to relocation and the Home Center & Hardware category saw one closure.
Reviewing closures by region, the Midwest saw the most closure activity at 30. The Northeast followed with 14 closing, the South saw ten, and the Atlantic nine. The Pacific region saw seven closures and the Southwest shuttered five. The Rocky Mountain region saw the least amount of closures at three.
